What've You Been Listening To?

Post  davethebuilder on Wed Aug 13, 2008 12:55 pm

Hey folks! Let's not let the fact that all the cats are out of the bag get in the way of our friendly conversation and mindless chatter. I mean...I need something to do at work on a rainy day to kill the time!

I was wondering what everyone's been listening to? Of course, with the Rock Hall annoucements I'm sure we've all been boning up on our Cream, Starship, Styx, etc. But, what's been in your CD player or iPod for the last year or so? Now don't go all eclectic on me just to prove your musical "depth". What've you really been listening to? Our playlists change all the time based on what's new or what we need a break from. For instance, who doesn't agree that Led Zeppelin is one of (or the) greatest band of all-time. But, to be honest, I haven't listened to them a whole lot over the past 6-8 months (I did dust off some Dread Zeppelin recently though).

Here's who I've been listening to:

Ben Folds / Ben Folds Five - he hasn't been too far gone from my CD player for years. New album coming out in September cheers
Dave Matthews Band - anything live far outweighs the studio stuff.
Cake - every Cake album requires several listens before it really clicks in my head. Check out their recent cover of Warpigs.
Jack Johnson - a summer staple.
Iron Maiden - still...after all these years. This was bona fide metal in a time of bad music.
Coldplay - although with all the excitement I still haven't listened to Viva La Vida.
My kids and I listen to children's music done by cool bands all the time like Barenaked Ladies (Snacktime), They Might Be Giants, Dan Zanes, Carole King (Really Rosie is one of the best kids albums of all time).

So...let me hear it!

What've You Been Listening To?

After the White Sox lineup was announced, I went on Itunes and bought a Hooters cd. I had totally forgotten about those guys. It's pretty darn good. I didn't realize just how socially conscious they were - songs addressing things like homelessness, drug addiiction, etc.

Like Dave, you've got to love Maiden. In fact, when I was in a student at NC State (way back in the early 80's) we had a huge poster of Eddie in our stairwell. WGD, you know what I talking about! Nobody can scream like Bruce Dickinson.

Ben Folds is cool, too. Quite a stretch from Iron Maiden, but cool none the less. Also pulled out some old Arrogance & Connells to help me get ready for 9/20. Seen them both multiple times and they are always great. Can't wait!

I've also recently been listening to some tunes specifically because they are connected with the show. Particularly I hadn't gotten around to listening to The Who in a long time. Too long really. Also listening to the Grand Society and Parmalee.

Also at the top of my playlist recently are Ryan Adams (not really rock per se, but I really love his stuff including old Whiskeytown.) and Seven Mary Three (they've never really been that popular, but their music really speaks to me).

I've been hearing that song a lot. They've got a little Judas Priest in them too. I'll have to check out the rest of the album.

I will echo the Iron Maiden love. I saw them in June and they sounded just as great as back in the day!

Here's what my iTunes says I've been listening to the most:

Steely Dan
Television
Who
Leonard Cohen
Opeth

Steve-o
I was at that show too. I saw him at Koka Booth 3 years ago and couldn't wait for him to come back. We're lucky we got him because the U.S. leg of his tour is short. How about Merlo's rap on Staple it Together...that was surprisingly funny! If you're listening to Jack and Slightly Stoopid you must have a little G. Love lying around too.

Starting to really get geared up for this EVENT, so I thought I'd download a bunch of stuff to get ready - even though it's over a month away! So, now on my iPod I have Cream, BOC, Grand Funk Railroad, Traffic, Dave Mason, Styx, YES, Rainbow, Jefferson Starship, Jefferson Airplane, Deep Purple, and of course, The Who. So much to choose from - and only 5 weeks to go!!!

Attention Scorpions Fans

Post  djknorr on Mon Sep 08, 2008 11:08 am

I just picked up a copy of the Scorpions 2007 release "Humanity Hour 1" and really, really enjoyed it. So much I couldn't resist a little promotion for such a good disc. They still ROCK!

I've been a Scorpions fan since the mid 70s and lost touch with them in the late 80s, even though I new they kept recording. They've slowed down a little, not quite in your face and definitely not heavy metal ballads (in fact not a single ballad on the entire disc) maybe matured is a better description. So if your a fan of the early Scorpions, pre- Blackout, make sure you check this one out.

Pre-"Blackout" like Love Drive/Animal Magnetism?

or further back like In Trance?

Either way - will have to check that out. I was a huge Scorpions fan back in the day (and of course love the Canes choice of signature song as a result)

Thanks for the tip DJ

Cinbu - did you hear about the Ben Folds Five reunion show? For the first time in 10 years they are going to perform in Chapel Hill in the first installment of a new MySpace series called Front-to-Back. Artists will be taped perfoming one of their albums in it's etirety. BFF will be doing The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner. Tickets went on sale yesterday and sold out in about 5 minutes.

I'll be there too. I kept trying after the show was announced as "Sold Out" (which was...10:01?!). I figured some folks would lose their hold on their tickets for various reasons. I scored two seats at 10:16 believe it or not!! 4th row mezzanine. Another babysitter night...I'm going to go broke that weekend.
